Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the most important celebration in the Chinese community because it's the official start of the year in their culture and tradition.

According to China Highlights, here's how you send greetings to your loved ones and friends during the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival.

The common greeting is Xīnnián hǎo which directly translates "New Year Goodness". But a more formal greeting is Xīn nián kuài lè, which literally means "New Year happiness".

However, overseas fans know only Gong xi fa cai, which in Mandarin means, "wishing you to be prosperous in the coming year." In Cantonese, it is known as Kung hei fat choy which means "Best wishes, wishing you happiness and prosperity".
