Congratulations to Zhao Liying for winning the Best Supporting Actress award at the 37th Hundred Flowers Awards, her first major acting award in a prestigious award-giving body for film excellence.Â
It is also Zhao Liying's first acting nomination at the Hundred Flowers Awards, one of the three major award-giving bodies in China, alongside Golden Rooster Awards and Huabiao Awards.
Zhao Liying won for her provoking role as a deaf-mute housewife, Hao Xiuping, in "Article 20", this year's blockbuster film from mainland China. The movie is directed by Zhang Yimou, who also won Best Director. The main female lead, Ma Li, won Best Actress.Â
Drama stars must transition to making movies because based on industry insiders' criticism, that is how their progress in the entertainment industry is measured. If they remain on the small screen (making series), industry critics will think they have not progressed in their craft at all.Â
So no wonder, most C-drama stars are now transitioning to making movies rather than staying forever in the dramalandia. Zhao Liying has an upcoming movie in the main role, "Unseen Sister".
