South Korean singer and actor, Lee Ji Han, 24, was among those who died in the Itaewon crowd crush in South Korea, on October 29, 2022, his agency, 935 Entertainment confirmed. "It's true that Lee Ji Han passed away due to the accident in Itaewon", the agency in a statement said.
Lee Ji Han's agency added: “We also hoped that it wasn’t true, and we were very shocked to hear the news. The family is suffering immense grief right now, so we are being very cautious. May he rest in peace.”
The news of Lee Ji Han’s passing first reached the public when several of his castmates from “Produce 101 Season 2,” including Park Hee Seok, Kim Do Hyun, and Cho Jin Hyung, took to Instagram to share the tragic news.
They wrote, “Ji Han has left this world and gone to a comfortable place. We ask that you say goodbye to him on his final path.”
Lee Ji Han debuted in the entertainment industry in the idol survival program, "Produce 101 Season 2" as a contestant in 2017, he then made his acting debut in the drama, “Today Was Another Nam Hyun Day”, in 2019.
According to some media reports, Lee Ji han was filming a romance fantasy series, The Season of Kkokdu, where he was in a supporting role, weeks before the tragedy.
The drama is scheduled to be aired in January 2023 on the MBC network. In the wake of his untimely death, the filming is halted to allow them to mourn.
At least 151 people died in Itaewon district, Seoul, South Korea, and hundreds were injured on the night of October 29, 2022. The investigation is still ongoing but according to the initial report, the reason for the huge number of casualties was a crowd crush.
A crowd crush can happen when a very small space is filled by an overflowing crowd with no space to breathe and move. What happened in Itaewon was that the crowd flowed to a narrow street without a clear exit, and people continued to enter the area, triggering a crush.
