Such a piece of shocking news we received today. Popular South Korean and multi-awarded actor, Lee Sun Kyun was found dead in the car park this morning, December 27, 2023, in an apparent suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. He was 48.
Lee Sun Kyun, who starred in the Oscar-winning South Korean film, Parasite, was reportedly found dead in a car park in Seoul, South Korea. According to Yonhap News Agency, the actor was discovered unresponsive in a car, Tuesday morning of December 27.
His death was confirmed by the South Korean police after the authorities responded to an emergency call from a distressed woman.Â
It was further revealed that the woman was Lee Sun Kyun's wife who reported her husband's departure after she found a suicide note he left behind. The vehicle was found on a street within Waryong Park in the Jongno district of Seoul.
The cause of death is believed to be carbon monoxide poisoning after the police found evidence of the burning charcoal briquettes inside Lee Sun Kyun’s car, which is potentially an act of suicide.
In October this year, Lee Sun Kyun made headlines after the police launched an investigation into his alleged drug abuse.
South Korea is known for its stringent drug laws and imposes severe penalties for drug-related offenses. Offenders can face a minimum of six months in prison, escalating to up to 14 years for repeat offenses and individuals involved in drug dealing.
Lee Sun-kyun gained international fame after portraying the role of a wealthy family's father in the critically acclaimed and Oscar Best Picture-winning film, "Parasite."Â
His contribution to the South Korean entertainment industry is massive. He starred in numerous hit South Korean films and TV series and received acting awards and citations several times, including a nomination for an International Emmy Award.
He was best known for his roles in films: "Our Town," "Romantic Island," "Paju," "Petty Romance," "Helpless," "All About My Wife," "Nobody's Daughter Haewon," "Our Sunhi," "A Hard Day," "The Advocate: A Missing Body," "The King's Case Note," "A Special Lady," and "Take Point."
Lee also starred in television series: "Loveholic," "White Tower," "Coffee Prince," "Triple," "Pasta," "Golden Time," "Miss Korea," "Listen to Love," "My Mister," "Diary of a Prosecutor," "Dr. Brain," and "Payback", which was aired early this year. His last appearance will be in the upcoming web series "No Way Out."
Lee Sun-kyun graduated from the Korea National University of Arts School of Drama in 1994. He made his acting debut in 2000 via "Make It Big".Â
He made his television drama debut in 2002 via "Lovers". Lee was also a Theater actor and a stage musical performer. He won the Baeksang Awards as Best Actor for Film "A Hard Day" in 2015.Â
