Congratulations to Shogun for winning this year's Outstanding Drama at the 76th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, California. Of its 25 nominations, the Japanese-themed historical series won four, all in the major categories!
Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Drama Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, Anna Sawai won Best Drama Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as Lady Mariko, and Frederick E.O. Toye as Best Drama Director.
Shogun is the second non-English language to win Outstanding Drama of the Year at Emmy Awards after Netflix's Squid Game from South Korea, in 2021.
Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada win Emmy! |
In accepting “Shōgun’s” drama series award, showrunner, and co-creator Justin Marks thanked the executives who “greenlit a costly, subtitled Japanese period piece whose central climax revolves around a poetry competition.”
Hiroyuki Sanada, who also co-produced Shogun, expressed his gratitude to everyone who has carried on the art of jidaigeki — samurai period dramas — over the years. “The passions and dreams we have inherited from you have crossed oceans and borders,” Sanada said in Japanese.
Shogun won 18 overall at Emmy Awards, the most ever awarded to a show in a single year. It also historic in its own right as it was the first time that an Asian actress (Anna Sawai) won Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Emmy. Sanada also became the second Asian actor to win the Best Actor in a Leading role after South Korean actor, Lee Jung-jae, won the same award in 2021 for his performance in “Squid Game.
Shogun will have seasons 2 and 3 soon but sad to say Anna Sawai might never return (still depends on the script) as her character, Mariko, was killed in Shogun season 1 but who knows? She might appear in flashbacks.
